WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Solutions to the Syrian conflict such as the US-Russian brokered ceasefire in the country’s southwest have to be given a chance to work, Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri said on Wednesday.
"When there are discussions with the Russians in solving these issues [such as] the de-escalation areas that they have agreed with the Russians, this is something real… so I think we have to give a chance for these kinds of solutions," Hariri said at an event in Washington, DC.
Hariri noted that previous ceasefires have not resolved the Syrian war and a solution for the conflict will ultimately only come through a political process.
The prime minister also said that Lebanon’s view on the future of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s leadership is that it is an issue for the Syrians to decide.
UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said last week that the next round of intra-Syria talks in Geneva will take place in early September.
