According to a report published earlier this year by Hootsuite and We Are Social that compiled data from multiple international sources and social media sources, an astounding 40 percent of the global population is using social media. This means that out of the 7.524 billion people in the world, an estimated 3.028 billion are social media users.
Out of all social media active users, a staggering 2.78 billion are on mobile devices. It's expected that by 2020, 86 percent of global social network users will use a mobile phone to access these platforms.
There has been a 4 percent increase in total global users since just this April. That's equivalent to 121 million people. However, this isn't particularly good news for Twitter. Though it may be US President Donald Trump's favorite platform, it is apparently not as appealing to the average person: its growth has been flat at 328 million monthly active users for the past three months.
However, according to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, the online news and social networking site is making amends. "We're strengthening our execution, which gives us confidence that our product improvements will continue to contribute to meaningful increases in daily active usage. We're also encouraged by the progress we're making executing against our top revenue generating priorities as we focus on making Twitter the best place to see and share what's happening, where you can see every side and perspective," Dorsey said in a statement at the end of last month.
The global social network landscape scene has changed dramatically over the last few years with the advent of Instagram, Snapchat and other platforms. Messaging apps have also transformed significantly, especially in China, India, Brazil and Mexico. China's leading social platform, WeChat, a mobile messaging app, is taking over its parent company Tencent. According to Tencent, the company has almost 549 million monthly active users after being on the market for four years.
