MOSCOW (Sputnik) – In December 2015, 149 of 1,401 of the country's jails had been highly overcrowded, The Hindustan Times reported, citing the latest National Crime Records Bureau figures.
According to the newspaper, in order to cope with the issue, Indian authorities have been implementing a number of steps, including a program aimed at the modernization of prisons launched in 2002.
Within the framework of the state program, 125 new prisons and 1,579 new barracks in existing jails have already been constructed, the news outlet added.
