VIENNA (Sputnik) — The minister added that the move was made in order to better monitor the situation and to prevent illegal border crossings.
"I have been informed that… big groups of undocumented migrants in the border areas are being detained with increasing frequency… we are introducing a direct and full-scale control [over the border] for an indefinite period of time," Wolfgang Sobotka said on his Facebook account.

For several recent years, the European countries have been facing the largest migration crisis since World War II. According to the figures of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), over 116,000 migrant arrivals by sea have been registered in 2017.
Stable and wealthy states such as Austria attract people from the crisis-torn countries of Africa and the Middle East. In January 2016, the Austrian government made a decision to limit the number of asylum seekers the country could accept. In 2017 these figures should not surpass 35,000 under the 2016 limitations.
