Greenpeace International Executive Director Bunny McDiarmid on Wednesday voiced concern over the escalation of rhetoric and tensions between the United States and North Korea over Pyongyang's nuclear program, urging both sides to de-escalate the situation as soon as possible.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, North Korea announced it was considering ballistic missile strikes near Guam, which hosts several US military bases. On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump said that if North Korea threatened the United States again Pyongyang would face an unprecedented level of "fire and fury."

"Greenpeace is alarmed by the escalating US-North Korean tension and urges all parties to rapidly de-escalate the situation," McDiarmid said as quoted in a statement by the Greenpeace press service.

With Pyongyang Defiant, Pentagon Weighs Allowing Seoul More Powerful Weapons
McDiarmid stressed that nuclear weapons were "neither a negotiating tactic nor a means to deliver true security," and that their use posed "an existential threat to all life on the planet."

Last month, Pyongyang conducted two tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles. According to the Korean Central News Agency, the latest launch on July 28 was successful, and the missile reached the altitude of 3,725 kilometers and traveled 998 kilometers for about 47 minutes before falling in the Sea of Japan.
