The French Socialist Party on Friday called on President Emmanuel Macron to actively participate in the resolution of the crisis around North Korea, pointing out France's lack of involvement.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Last week, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) approved sanctions against North Korea, whose missile and nuclear program have been a source of concern for the international community for a long time.

"The Socialist Party calls on the President of France and Foreign Minister [Jean-Yves Le Drian] to urgently make a stand demanding from the United Nations Security Council to ensure the implementation of the resolution that was unanimously adopted on August 5, aiming to push Pyongyang toward the negotiations table," the party said.

The Socialists said that the escalation of tensions between the United States and North Korea could lead to "an uncontrollable diplomatic situation."

"Russia and China are worried. South Korea and Japan are getting ready. Meanwhile, France is silent," the statement read.

The Socialists were referring to Pyongang's promise to retaliate against the United States following the adoption of sanctions. US President Donald Trump said that Washington would respond with "fire and fury" to any possible threats. Pyongyang then said it was considering an attack near the Pacific island of Guam where several US military bases are located.
