The UK Defense Ministry denied to Sputnik on Friday the reports that the United States had asked the UK air force to join an operation to locate nuclear sites in North Korea.

LONDON (Sputnik) – Earlier in the day, the Daily Mirror newspaper reported, citing unnamed sources, that the Royal Air Force had been asked to join an international operation to pinpoint North Korean nuclear sites and artillery batteries. At least one UK spy plane could be deployed to a base in Japan within a fortnight should this request be supported by the House of Commons, the lower house of the UK parliament, the media outlet claimed.

“Absolutely not true,” the ministry’s spokesperson said when asked about the allegations.

A source told the newspaper that the stepping-up of the intelligence gathering against North Korea was needed to minimize the death toll should the conflict between the United States and North Korea take place.

On Tuesday, Trump told reporters that North Korea would face an unprecedented level of "fire and fury" if it continues to threaten the United States. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, in response, said that North Korea was considering an attack on Guam, a Pacific island which hosts multiple US military bases.

The situation on the Korean Peninsula has become aggravated in recent months due to a series of missile launches and nuclear tests conducted by Pyongyang in violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

North Korea's military said Wednesday it was considering a missile attack near the US island territory of Guam after President Donald Trump threatened Pyongyang with "fire and fury." Guam hosts several US military bases.
