UK Stands With US Against Racism Amid Charlottesville Far-Right Rally - May

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — UK Prime Minister Theresa May condemned on Sunday the violence at a far-right rally in the US city of Charlottesville, stressing that the United Kingdom stood together with the United States against racism and hatred.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with #Charlottesville. The UK stands with the US against racism, hatred and violence," May said on Twitter.

​On Saturday, Trump condemned the violence in Charlottesville, organized by far-right nationalists, stating that the events were a "display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides."

Trump subsequently faced fierce criticism for failure to directly condemn the actions of nationalists and neo-Nazis that staged the rally.

The rally in Charlottesville was organized by far-right activists on Saturday as a protest against plans to remove a monument to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The rally led to clashes between the demonstrators and counterprotesters, culminating in a car ramming attack, which left one person dead and over 30 injured.

Governor of Virginia Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency in the town.

Several US senators, including Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Tim Scott, Cory Gardner and Michael Bennet, have also condemned Charlottesville violence as an act of "domestic terrorism."
