WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US-led coalition carried out 38 strikes against the Daesh terror group (outlawed in Russia) consisting of 57 engagements in both Iraq and Syria on Monday, including 27 near the Syrian city of Raqqa, Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve said in a press release.
"Near Raqqah, 27 strikes engaged 19 ISIS [Daesh] tactical units; and destroyed 59 fighting positions, two heavy machine guns, a mortar system, an IED [improvised explosive device], and a logistics node," the release stated on Tuesday.
Four other strikes in Syria targeted Daesh near Al Shadaddi and Deir ez-Zor, engaging three Daesh units, destroying five fighting positions, two command and control nodes and six oil stills.
There were 33 other strikes consisting of 47 engagements in both Syria and Iraq which were conducting August 10-13 that closed in the past 24 hours, the release added.
The US-led coalition of more than 70 members is conducting airstrikes, ground-based and rocket-propelled artillery fire against Daesh in Syria and Iraq. The strikes in Iraq are conducted in support of the Iraqi government, but those in Syria are not authorized by the government of President Bashar Assad or the UN Security Council.
