On January 20, US President Donald Trump promulgated that his administration would follow “two simple rules: buy American and hire American.” But if you stop by Trump Tower in New York to snag a souvenir coffee mug of the First Family posing in front of the White House, you’ll be buying a product made in Thailand.

New York-based anchor J.D. Durkin snapped a picture on Wednesday showing coffee cups featuring President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and their son Barron happily gathered on the South Lawn of the White House.

White House assistant to the president Ivanka Trump, the president’s 35-year-old daughter, has had shoes for her line manufactured in China, another stark break from "buy American, hire American."

The Trumps claim that their business interests have been divorced from the family while Trump is in office. But it’s hard to ignore the conflict of interest presented by, for example, rising membership fees at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida as Trump’s personal brand becomes more recognizable with his presidency, or in having a Trump-branded hotel in the nation’s capital.

The AP’s Julie Bykowicz and Stephen Braun reported on June 17 that Trump International Hotel Washington, DC, just blocks from the White House on 11th St. and Pennsylvania  Ave., earned $20 million in revenues in the early months after it opened while Mar-a-Lago "pulled in millions of dollars more than it had previously."
