MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The head of the Cairo platform delegation, Firas Khalidi, told Sputnik that Syrian President Bashar Assad’s role in Syrian settlement is yet to be discussed during the talks.
"We have not yet reached this discussion. The position [on Assad’s role] will result from the discussion and we will announce it," Khalidi added.
Syrian opposition Riyadh-formed High Negotiations Committee (HNC) and the Cairo and Moscow opposition platforms will start talks on the country’s crisis settlement in the Saudi capital on Monday, Khalidi said.
The opposition platforms' meeting was initially expected to start in Riyadh on Sunday. During the talks, the parties are expected to prepare for the next round of intra-Syrian Geneva negotiations slated for September.
"Preparation meetings are being held, but the main talks have not started yet, because we are waiting for the arrival of the Moscow platform," Khalidi said, adding that the delegation would arrive in Riyadh late on Sunday.
The UNSC Resolution 2254 of December 18, 2015, sees an inclusive and Syrian-led political process that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people as the only sustainable solution to the current crisis in Syria. The document also emphasizes the importance of the truce in the country.
