Greenpeace issued a profound report on Tuesday which reveals the severe vulnerability to possible external attacks of the nuclear facilities in Belgium and France.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Greenpeace revealed the great danger for the so-called spent fuel storage pools at nuclear power plants in Belgium and France. Environmental Watchdog stressed in a report issued on Tuesday that these highly radioactive facilities are not secured properly, therefore they are vulnerable to malicious external attacks.

"Experts are particularly concerned about a certain type of facility at nuclear plants: the spent fuel storage pools. These pools tend to contain the highest volume of radioactive matter in a nuclear plant and are very poorly protected," Greenpeace said in a press release, accompanying the report.

The environmental organization said that the risk faced by nuclear plants "cannot be ignored any longer."

"In the event of an outside attack, if a pool is damaged and loses its water, the fuel is no longer cooled and a nuclear accident begins: massive amounts of radioactivity escape into the atmosphere with very serious consequences," the press release said.

The organization therefore called on the French and Belgium nuclear operators to take action on the matter.

The report on the spent nuclear fuel storage pools, which was compiled with the participation of independent experts, will be submitted to nuclear authorities in Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg to notify them about the existing threat.
