WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has pleaded guilty to charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, ABC News reported on Monday.
Bergdahl, who was held by the Taliban terror group until May 2014, now faces a sentence of life in prison, according to media reports.
Bergdahl is accused of putting fellow soldiers at risk by leaving his post in Afghanistan in 2009. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison on charges of desertion and misbehavior.
The soldier was captured by the Taliban and held for five years until former President Barack Obama’s administration approved a prisoner swap for five Taliban prisoners.
US President Donald Trump has slammed Obama's decision and Bergdahl, whom he called a traitor, leading his lawyers to question whether the soldier can get a fair trial.
