The European Parliament is holding a plenary session on the killing of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Strasbourg with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Council Federica Mogherini giving a statement on the case.

Riyadh's explanations on the alleged murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the country's consulate in Istanbul leave many questions unanswered, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said during the session.

"The explanations offered so far by the Saudi authorities leave many doubts and many questions unanswered," Mogherini said at the European Parliament's plenary session.

The head of the EU diplomatic service added that the bloc was hoping for a "full, credible, transparent and prompt investigation."

Mogherini stressed that the probe should be driven by the desire to uncover the truth rather than by geopolitics.

"The European Union's reaction from now on will depend on the next steps that will be taken by Saudi authorities," Mogherini said.

According to the EU foreign policy chief, the bloc countries will coordinate internally and with international partners to determine a common stance on the reaction.

Khashoggi, known for his criticism of Saudi policies, has recently been working as a columnist for The Washington Post. The journalist was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

On October 19, Saudi Arabia admitted that the journalist had been killed in a fight inside the consulate.
