New Delhi (Sputnik): The Indian Army has launched the process of acquiring through-the-wall radars that can detect terrorists and insurgents, who usually hide in wall cavities and false ceilings.
"The Through Wall Radar System should be able to detect moving and stationary, single and multiple living objects up to a distance of minimum 20 meters when placed along a double brick wall or a reinforced concrete wall on a continuous basis," the request of information issued by the Indian Army reads.

The Indian Army wants a system that is man-portable, of less than 10 Kgs and must be operable by maximum two persons. The system should also be remotely operable optimally from a minimum distance of 100m in Line of Sight.
"Indian Army has been increasingly facing the situation in which terrorists attack soldiers while hiding behind walls resulting in heavy casualties. It has also been found that generally, a few terrorists prolong the counter-insurgency operation by taking shelter behind the walls," Colonel Danvir Singh (Retd.) told Sputnik.

Meanwhile, the initiation of fresh purchase also indicates that the country's own ‘Divyachakshu' (Divine Eye) radars deployed in Jammu and Kashmir last year was apparently not able to fulfill the requirements of the army.
‘Divyachakshu' through-the-barrier imaging radar is developed by Bangalore-based Electronics and Radar Development Establishment unit of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the premier defense research unit of the Indian government. The project was commissioned following the 26/11 Mumbai attacks where terrorists were holed up in the Taj Mahal and Oberoi Trident hotels along with the occupants.
