MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) - Juan Guaido, the head of the Venezuelan opposition-led National Assembly, said on Tuesday that his government was recognized by as many as 60 countries worldwide.

"Those who usurped power in Miraflores [Venezuelan presidential palace] thought that they would defeat us, while 60 countries of the world recognize our democratic struggle today. And one country a day recognizes us," Guaido said while addressing a rally in Caracas broadcast by TV Venezuela.

Guaido also noted that he would continue to appoint ambassadors to other countries and to "save the country's assets" abroad.

Earlier in the day, numerous Venezuelan opposition supporters took to the streets across the country to demand that the government let in foreign relief aid. The rallies were called by Guaido, who urged the Venezuelan military on Monday not to block humanitarian aid shipments.

The political crisis erupted in Venezuela after Guaido proclaimed himself the country's interim president in late January. The opposition leader was recognized by the United States and some other countries.

Russia, China, Iran, Turkey and Mexico as well as several other nations, have backed constitutionally elected Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as the country's legitimate president and demanded a respect for the principle of non-interference in Venezuela's internal affairs.
