The disturbance over the southwest Gulf of Mexico could strengthen into "a short-lived tropical cyclone tonight or on Friday," the NHC said.
Late Friday or early Saturday the disturbance is expected to merge with a cold front or turn into a post-tropical storm.

"Regardless of development, gale-force winds are expected behind the cold front over the western Gulf of Mexico on Friday and Saturday," the NHC said.
