According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), a further 81,153 people have tested positive for the coronavirus disease over the preceding 24 hours, taking the overall number of cases confirmed since the start of the outbreak above 2.24 million.
Europe and the US remain the most severely affected by the disease.
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the United States has surpassed 755,000 while the death toll stands at over 40,400. New York is the number one coronavirus hot spot in the country. New York City only has reported over 14,450 coronavirus fatalities, according to JHU.
Meanwhile, China, where the virus was first registered last December, has registered 12 new cases of COVID-19 and no new fatalities in the past 24 hours.
