On Friday, a record number of infections was confirmed in the United States, with over 71,000 new cases, according to Johns Hopkins University. A major surge has also hit Central and South America, with Brazil, Peru, Mexico, and Chile showing rising numbers of new cases.
Globally, COVID-19 has claimed over 560,000 lives, of which more than 134,000 were lost in the United States, 71,469 in Brazil, and 44,883 in the United Kingdom. The number of cases worldwide is currently over 12.6 million and is still rising, Johns Hopkins University data shows.
