India to Make Around 5,000 Anti-Tank Guided Missiles to Boost War Capabilities
11:28 GMT 19.03.2021 (Updated: 20:53 GMT 19.10.2022) France-based MBDA Missile Systems transferred the technology to manufacture the Milan 2T anti-guided missile to an Indian company in 2009. The Milan 2T is a second-generation semi-automatic command to line-of-sight (SACLOS) guided missile which can hit targets at range of around 1,800 metres.
On Friday, India's Defence Ministry ordered the state-owned Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) to manufacture 4,960 Milan-2T anti-tank guided missiles as part of an army contract worth $162 million.
The Milan-2T is an anti-tank guided tandem-charge warhead with a range of 1,850 metres, produced by BDL under license from MBDA Missile Systems, headquartered in France.
“These missiles can be fired from ground as well as vehicle-based launchers and can be deployed in anti-tank roles for both offensive and defensive tasks. Induction of these missiles will further enhance the operational preparedness of the armed forces. Induction is planned to be completed in three years,” the statement issued by the ministry reads.
The Indian Army has around 30,000 Milan 2T missiles in its arsenal, which are deployed along the country's western and northern borders. The missile has a relatively short range because of its line-of-sight guidance, however, a semi-automatic command to line-of-sight (SACLOS) missile like the Milan cannot be easily jammed using chaff or flares.
