The US Supreme Court's decision to overrule the Roe v Wade abortion ruling has already triggered pro-choice and pro-life demonstrations in Washington, DC. The draft opinion was leaked earlier this year, prompting condemnation from Democrats and praise from Republicans.
"Today, the Supreme Court of the United States expressly took away a Constitutional right from the American people that it had already recognized. They didn't limit it, they simply took it away. That's never been done to a right so important to so many Americans, but they did it. It's a sad day for the Court and for the country," President Joe Biden said on Friday as he addressed the nation following the SCOTUS ruling overturning the landmark 1973 Roe v Wade decision, which had guaranteed American women's right to abortion for nearly five decades.
"It's a realization of an extreme ideology and a tragic error by the Supreme Court in my view," Biden added.
According to POTUS, with the ruling, the Supreme Court has made the United States an "outlier" in the world. The US president continued by saying that "the health and life of women in this nation are now at risk", and insisted that "the Court literally [took] America back 150 years. It’s a sad day for the country."
At the same time, he said that the ruling doesn't mean that "the fight is over": "Make no mistake: This decision is the culmination of a deliberate effort over decades to upset the balance of our law."
As the nation is divided in opinion, with pro-life and pro-choice demonstrations taking place at the Supreme Court following the announcement, Buden called on people to keep all protests peaceful.
"I call on everyone, no matter how deeply they care about this decision, to keep all protests peaceful—peaceful, peaceful, peaceful—No intimidation. Violence is never acceptable."
Biden called on Congress to take action to codify protections for abortions into federal law, stressing the importance of voters casting ballots in favor of pro-abortion candidates during midterm elections this fall.
"Voters need to make their voices heard. This fall, you must elect more senators and representatives who will codify the woman's right to choose in federal law once again. This fall, 'Roe' is on the ballot. Personal freedoms are on the ballot -- the right to privacy, liberty, equality, are all on the ballot."

US Supreme Court Overturns Landmark Roe v. Wade Allowing States to Ban Abortions
The visibly angry US president said some states come up with laws "jeopardizing the health of millions of women", highlighting how in some cases, state legislators allow women to be "punished for protecting their health" and force women to "bear their rapist's child."
POTUS then laid out actions his administration would take in a bid to ease access to abortion after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade:
"Women must remain free to travel safely to another state to seek care they need. My administration will defend that bedrock right. If any state or local official - high or low - tried to interfere with the woman's exercise in her basic right to travel, I will do everything in my power to fight that deeply un-American attack. My administration will also protect a woman's access to medications that were approved by the Food and Drug Administration, the FDA, like contraception, which is essential for preventative healthcare."
Meanwhile, US Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement that the Justice Department would work to protect and "advance reproductive freedom." The AG stated that the department would protect providers and those seeking abortions in states where it is legal. Garland added that he would stand by the approved use by the FDA of the drug Mifepristone for medication abortions.
The US Supreme Court announced on Friday the decision to overturn the landmark 1973 ruling that legalized abortion nationwide. The draft of the decision was leaked in May, triggering protests across the country, as well as a SCOTUS probe into the source of the leak.

LIVE UPDATES: Protests Erupt at Supreme Court After Roe v Wade Overturned
Expressing the opinion supported by the majority of the nine-justice court, Justice Samuel Alito said: "Roe was egregiously wrong from the start. Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division."
The five justices appointed by Republican presidents - Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett - voted in favor of striking down the abortion decision. Three justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan voted against, while Chief Justice John Roberts abstained. The Supreme Court's decision gives all 50 states the freedom to ban the procedure.
Some states have already moved to ban abortion following the Roe v Wade decision, with Missouri becoming the first US state to do so. Nearly half are expected to do ban the procedure in some form, with 13 states relying on so-called "trigger" laws to automatically begin the process of enforcing pre-determined abortion restrictions.
