The US Supreme Court has overruled Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision establishing a constitutional right to abortion. Now states are able to regulate the practice of abortion.
Protests have erupted outside the US Supreme Court after a majority of justices voted to overturn Roe v Wade, which had been protecting American women's right to abortion for nearly five decades.
“The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives” the ruling said.
Justice Samuel Alito, who authored the Supreme Court’s written opinion, said the US Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of states from regulating or prohibiting abortion and the Roe and Casey decisions abrogated that authority.
Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan dissented from the court’s majority decision, arguing that overruling the Roe decision discarded a “balance” between the competing values of protecting the life of unborn children and safeguarding a woman’s health and life. The Roe and Casey decisions maintained that balance, the justices said. The dissenting justices criticized the majority’s decision and said that it will certainly result in the “curtailment of women’s rights” and status as equal citizens.

Man Scales Frederick Douglass Bridge in Protest of Roe v. Wade Being Overturned
A man scaled the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C to protest the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The man, Guido Reichstadter, began scaling the bridge around 11 am and claimed he will be on the bridge for as long as he physically can. He is estimated to be 70 feet above the ground. An inflatable was placed underneath Reichstadter at around noon.
The incident has shut down traffic on the 1,400 ft bridge that traverses the Anacostia River and prompted a response from the District Department of Transportation.
"The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announces that the Frederick Douglas Memorial Bridge (FDMB) is currently shut down. The closure is needed for safety concerns involved with protest activity and will remain in effect until further notice." The statement adds, "Motorists are strongly encouraged to plan ahead for their afternoon commute and use alternate routes away from the South Capital Street and the FDMB area. Traffic enforcement officers are on the scene directing traffic. Motorists should use extra caution as they travel in the area of the FDMB, anticipate moderate delays, and to be mindful of emergency personnel."

Canadian PM Trudeau Slams SCOTUS Roe v Wade Ruling as 'Horrific'
OTTAWA (Sputnik) - Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday expressed solidarity with women in the United States and renewed his commitment regarding Canadian women's right to have abortion after hearing the news that the US Supreme Court ruled to overturn its earlier decision in the Roe v. Wade case.
"The news coming out of the United States is horrific. My heart goes out to the millions of American women who are now set to lose their legal right to an abortion. I can’t imagine the fear and anger you are feeling right now," Trudeau said via Twitter.
Trudeau also reaffirmed his commitment to Canadian women's right to choose to have an abortion.
"No government, politician, or man should tell a woman what she can and cannot do with her body. I want women in Canada to know that we will always stand up for your right to choose," Trudeau said.
Earlier on Friday, the US Supreme Court overturned the precedent established in the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision and ruled that states may regulate the practice of abortion. Some US states already have so-called "trigger laws" that would outlaw or restrict the practice of abortion with allowed exceptions such as when the life of the mother is in danger.
