Earlier this week, White House National security spokesman John Kirby said that Ukraine has started using cluster munitions, adding that Kiev was using them "appropriately".
Ukrainian armed forces used cluster munitions against civilian infrastructure in Russia's Belgorod, shelling the village of Zhuravlevka, according to regional head Vyacheslav Gladkov.
He clarified that militants used 21 artillery shells and 3 cluster projectiles, fired from a MLRS.
In addition, nationalists used grenade launchers and kamikaze drones against the village. Ukrainian troops also shelled another village in Belgorod region – Shetinovka, using grenade launchers, artillery and UAVs.

According to Gladkov, there were no casualties or damage to the infrastructure.
Early in July, US President Joe Biden announced the decision to provide Kiev with cluster munitions. Cluster munitions are banned under an international convention which has been ratified by 123 countries, excluding the US, Ukraine, China and Russia.
Vladimir Putin, commenting on this decision, reminded that previous US administrations dubbed such actions as a crime and added that the Russian army has a big stockpile of various cluster munitions.
The international non-governmental organization Human Rights Watch said that providing Kiev with such arms will ultimately lead to the long-term suffering of civilians and will nullify the international consensus not to use cluster munitions.
