The Sputnik International News Agency and Radio held specialized sessions of the SputnikPro project as part of UN Global Media and Information Literacy Week for listeners from the University of Limpopo, South Africa, and Lebanese University.
As part of online meetings with students and teaching staff from journalism departments, Head of Sputnik International Viktoria Polikarpova and Director of International Cooperation at Sputnik Vasily Pushkov spoke about fake news and how to counter it, and also gave a Russian perspective on the current state of international media communications.
“We are happy to be the part of the celebration of Global Media Literacy Week. Previously, our students have already had the opportunity to participate in master classes of local South African media experts and the Sputnik workshop is our first international master class,” said Dr. Edgar Malatji, senior lecturer at the Department of Communication, Media and Information Studies of the University of Limpopo.

“The first meeting of the Faculty of Information of the Lebanese University as part of the SputnikPro project was very fruitful, and it taught us about the agency’s work and the important role it plays. It was an opportunity for fellow journalists to ask questions during the discussion and exchange views with the curators of the session,” noted Michel Daoud, head of the department of master’s student affairs at Lebanese University.
“As professional journalists, our main responsibility is to recognize and debunk fake news, to show people the true version of events,” said Head of Sputnik International Viktoria Polikarpova.
Global Media and Information Literacy Week is marked annually from October 24 to 31 in accordance with the UN resolution.
