Newly surfaced court documents have revealed that the off-duty pilot who recently attempted to shut down the engines of an Alaska Airlines flight confessed to having taken psychedelic mushrooms for the first time some 48 hours before the flight. In addition to 160 state charges, which include attempted murder and reckless endangerment, the US Attorney's Office - District of Oregon has also brought federal charges against off-duty pilot Joseph David Emerson for interfering with flight crew members and attendants. Arresting officers documented that Emerson, at one point, confessed to having "tried to kill everybody."Emerson was seated in the cockpit's jumpseat as an authorized occupant, engaging in casual conversation with the pilots. Suddenly, he declared, "I'm not okay," and proceeded to pull the handles of the fire suppression system. These handles are essential for stopping engine fires and shutting off fuel to the engines. One of the pilots swiftly intervened, while the other declared an in-flight emergency. Although Emerson initially resisted, he calmed down after a brief struggle lasting about 30 seconds. Officials have stated that had Emerson been able to fully shut down the engines, it would have turned "the aircraft into a glider within seconds" by cutting off hydraulics and fuel.Witnesses reported that Emerson, seemingly peaceful at this point, walked to the back of the plane. He later informed a flight attendant, "you need to cuff me right now or it's going to be bad," prompting them to restrain him with flex cuffs.Documents have detailed that Emerson attempted to open an emergency exit. Following an emergency landing at Portland International Airport, the off-duty pilot was taken into custody by the Port of Portland Police. During a police interview, he cited a "nervous breakdown," claiming he hadn't slept for 40 hours, felt dehydrated, and exhausted. He admitted to pulling the handles, stating, "I thought I was dreaming, and I just wanna wake up."Emerson pleaded not guilty to charges in court on Tuesday and remains on suicide watch while in police custody.
