Newman, a vessel lost over 152 years ago and absent from historical and nautical charts. The George L. Newman, a ship measuring 122 feet in length, met its fate amidst the Great Peshtigo Fire, the deadliest in US history.The Wisconsin Historical Society plans to survey the wreck in spring 2024, assessing its eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

The wooden three-masted bark, built in 1855 in Black River, Ohio, and valued at $8,800 at its construction time (approximately $300,000 today), sailed for only 16 years before its dramatic end in 1871.
On October 8, 1871, while sailing with a lumber cargo, the ship grounded near Green Island in dense smoke. The lighthouse keeper on the island, Samuel Drew, rescued the crew, who salvaged what they could from the wreck.
The Wisconsin Historical Society plans to survey the wreck in spring 2024, assessing its eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
