At least 27 civilians died and 20 others were injured, including two children, in the strike at the market on Sunday morning, Donetsk People's Republic leader Denis Pushilin said.
"We strongly condemn this, and naturally the special military operation will continue in order to protect our people from this danger," Peskov told reporters, adding that the attack was "monstrous act of terrorism, as weapons are used indiscriminately."
The Russian permamnent mission to the UN plans to address the deadly Donetsk shelling at an upcoming meeting of the Security Council. The meeting will be attended by the Russian foreign minister.
Commenting on the recent statement of Donald Trump, Peskov told journalists that Russian diplomats had no contacts with the former US president on the settlement of the situation in Ukraine.
"No, we do not have an understanding of how this can be feasible. There have been no contacts in this regard," Peskov said, answering the question whether the Kremlin has an understanding of how Trump intends to achieve peace in Ukraine and whether there have been any contacts with Russian diplomats in this regard.
Following his victory in the Iowa Republican Caucus, the 45th POTUS pledged to swiftly resolve conflict in Ukraine should he be re-elected. In his speech on January 16, Trump claimed familiarity with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, expressing confidence in his ability to quickly mediate a solution to the conflict. This statement echoed Trump's earlier comments to CNN's Kaitlan Collins, where he would resolve the conflict within 24 hours.
