MOSCOW, January 5 (Sputnik) – Taiwan's former president Chen Shui-bian was granted a one-month medical parole Monday after having served six years in jail for corruption, the Xinhua said, citing Taiwanese authorities.
Chen will be released on Monday afternoon but once his physical condition improves, he will return to the Taichung Prison, the judicial authority announced at a press conference, according to the news agency.
Chen is reportedly suffering from a sleep disorder and from deterioration of his mental functioning, as stated by the Taiwan authority. During the month, his health will be constantly monitored.
Chen Shui-bian was president of Taiwan from 2000 to 2008. In 2013, Chen and his wife were charged with bribery, money laundering and embezzlement. In February the Taiwan High Court sentenced the couple to 20 years in prison. Because of poor health Chen's wife has not been placed in prison.
