WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States will offer law enforcement assistance to Tunisian authorities in the investigation of the terrorist attack at Tunisia’s National Bardo Museum, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said in a statement.
The identities of the attackers are unknown, Earnest said, but the attackers are cowardly, and the United States condemns the attackers and extends sympathies to the Tunisian people.
Earnest noted that the United States is proud of the cooperation it has accomplished with Tunisia on counterterrorism and broader security issues, and will continue to stand with Tunisians against violence.
The last terrorist incident in Tunisia was on January 3, 2015 when Islamic militants killed a Tunisian policeman by cutting his throat and stabbing his heart. Previous media reports indicate nine suspects have been arrested in that attack.
