"Mr. Jaafari in details informed us about the situation in Iraq, currently repelling a terrorist attack," Lavrov said after talks with his Iraqi counterpart Ibrahim Jaafari in Moscow.
Iraq is currently combating the Islamic State (ISIL) jihadist group, which gained a foothold in the country in summer 2014. The group, which has also been operating in Syria since 2012, has captured vast areas in both countries and proclaimed a caliphate on the controlled territories.
"We reaffirmed our solidarity with the leadership of the friendly state and reaffirmed our strong commitment to continue to provide assistance to Baghdad in order to strengthen its defense in the face of this threat, ensuring the unity, territorial integrity of the state and non-interference from outside in its internal affairs," the minister stressed.
Iraq's Defense Ministry announced on February 1 that its Army Air Corps had received a new shipment of two Russian Mi-28NE "Night Hunter" attack helicopters.
Russia delivered the first batch of Su-25 aircraft to Iraq in June 2014, after the United States delayed its delivery of F-16 fighter jets, which the Iraqi Air Force had planned to use in the fight against the Islamic State.
Last month, the Iraqi Defense Ministry stressed that the timely delivery of jets to Iraq had helped Baghdad to battle extremists, including the IS militant group.
