SNP's Landslide Victory in Scotland to Ignite Further Devolution of Powers

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Alexander Mosesov — The historic result of the Scottish National Party (SNP) in Thursday's UK general election will lead to further devolution of powers to Britain's northernmost country, leader of the Britain First far-right political party Paul Golding told Sputnik on Friday.

In the general election held on May 7, the pro-independence SNP has taken a historical lead over the Labour in Scotland, winning 56 Scottish seats available at Westminster.

"With the SNP's clear up in Scotland, they will now use their 56 MPs in Westminster and also the dominance now in Scotland to push to further devolution, further powers for Scotland, and who can blame them?" Golding said.

Britain First's leader also called for the reconfiguration of the United Kingdom's electoral system.

"It's the sheer stupidity of our present electoral system that allowed the SNP to win all seats in Scotland," Golding said.

In Scotland, SNP lost just three out of 59 seats to other parties — one to the Labour, one to the Conservatives, and one to the Liberal Democrats.

In the previous British parliament, the SNP had only six seats.

The Scottish National Party was behind the September 2014 referendum on Scotland's membership in the United Kingdom. The vote has failed, but the SNP has seen a fourfold increase in membership over the past two years – to 110,000 as of this spring.
