WASHINGON (Sputnik) — US President Barack Obama thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping for Beijing’s role in reaching a nuclear agreement with Iran and vowed to continue US-China dialogue in finalizing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the White House announced in a statement on Tuesday.
“The President spoke to Chinese President Xi Jinping on July 20 to express appreciation for the role China played in reaching a historic, long-term comprehensive nuclear deal between the P5+1 and Iran,” the White House statement read.
Both leaders agreed to continue US-China cooperation in ensuring the full implementation of the JCPOA.
Last week, Iran and the P5+1 group of international negotiators — Russia, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany – agreed to lift sanctions on Iran in exchange for a verification regime to ensure Tehran did not develop nuclear weapons.
On Monday, the UN Security Council voted unanimously to adopt UN Resolution 2231 in support of the JCPOA. Ahead of the UN Security Council vote, the P5+1 group of countries said that the resolution would not go into effect for 90 days, giving the US Congress time to review the deal.
