ANKARA (Sputnik) — Turkish police detained some 600 people suspected of participating in terrorist activities, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Saturday.
On Friday, Ankara said that Turkish police have begun an anti-terrorist operation against the Islamic State (ISIL) militants and pro-Kurdish rebels.
“As at today, operations were held in 22 provinces of the country, 590 people were detained, who are suspected of participation in three terrorist organizations and pose a potential threat to the national security,” Davutoglu said at a press conference in Ankara.
The operation was launched after a terrorist attack in the Turkish city of Suruc earlier this week, which claimed the lives of 32 people and injured over 100.
On Friday, the Turkish Air Force carried out its first airstrikes against ISIL positions in Syria.
