MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Greek voters will elect a new legislature on Sunday, after Alexis Tsipras, who remains the Syriza leader, resigned from the post of prime minister in August while the opposition failed to form a new government in the country.
According to the Kapa Research poll conducted for the Greek To Vima newspaper, Syriza could get 29 percent of the vote in the upcoming election, while New Democracy may gain 28.4 percent.
The poll was conducted between Tuesday and Wednesday, to take advantage of public sentiment following the latest televised pre-election debates.
Both parties show a noticeable increase compared to previous polls, the newspaper said.
The popularity of Syriza and the New Democracy parties have been running neck-and-neck over the last two weeks, according to various national and local opinion polls.
Earlier this week, two polls conducted for Greek media revealed that New Democracy party formally had a small lead over Syriza, in spite of Tsipras's higher approval rating than New Democracy leader Evangelos Meimarakis. Tsipras polled as more reliable in terms of social reform and negotiating the Greek debt.
