LUGANSK (Sputnik) — A rally commemorating the deadly May 2014 Odessa fire will be held Monday in Austria’s capital Vienna, a member of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) said.
May 2 marks two years since a fire at the House of Trade Unions in Odessa, Ukraine killed 48 anti-Kiev activists and wounded over 250.
"A special event will be held in Vienna this afternoon," WFTU Austria member Oliver Jonischkeit said at a memorial service in Lugansk, eastern Ukraine. "Our colleagues in Austria will remember the victims of fascism and those who perished during the tragic events in Odessa."
The rally will take place near the Monument Against War and Fascism on Albertinaplatz in central Vienna. Jonischkeit said they planned to make it an annual event.
Exactly two years ago, far-right hooligans blocked anti-Kiev protesters in the House of Trade Unions and set the building on fire by hurling Molotov cocktails inside. An investigation was opened into the incident but no convictions followed.
