MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Police arrested eight people during clashes between two rival protest groups at the Texas State Capitol in Austin, where a monument recognizing contribution of the African-American community to the state was officially unveiled, local media reported.
A group of white supremacists protesting against the monument was countered on Saturday by groups against inequality and hatred, Spectrum News reported.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, cited by the media, eight protesters were arrested for interference with public duty, assault, evading arrest and disorderly conduct.
After Donald Trump's victory in the US 2016 presidential election, the Southern Poverty Law Center civil rights group collected over 700 media reports of hateful incidents or harassment in the country. During the electoral campaign Trump repeatedly resorted to controversial rhetoric speaking about immigrants and Muslim communities, in particular.
