Austrians return to the polls early next month to redo last summer’s invalidated presidential election, giving Freedom Party candidate Norbert Hofer a second shot at coming out on top and riding the right-wing wave that’s sweeping across post-war Europe and the globe.

Dogged by media accusations that he’s too much of a fringe politician, Norbert Hofer surprisingly upset the “experts” by coming in a very close second nearly half a year ago, only to have his electoral defeat fortuitously overturned due to voting irregularities.

Now Mr. Hofer has the chance to become an “Austrian Trump” by defying the establishment’s expectations and giving a voice to the distraught masses who have had enough with Western liberalism.

Regardless of the eventual results, however, it’s now undeniable that the right wing is seeing a revival all across the world, even in places where it was previously taboo.

Sergei Utkin, Head of Strategic Assessment Section at the Primakov Institute of World Economy and International Relations, Russian Academy of Sciences (studio guest), Thomas Seifert, Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Wiener Zeitung (Vienna), Domitilla Sagramoso, Lecturer, Department of War Studies, King's College London and Dr. Roslyn Fuller, Research Associate, Waterford Institute of Technology and author of: Beasts and Gods: How Democracy Changed Its Meaning and Lost Its Purpose joined us to discuss the topic.
