WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – As of late Tuesday, 54 of the 232 Democratic electors had requested that Director of National Intelligence James Clapper authorize a briefing prior to the body’s meeting next Monday to elect the next president, Politico reported.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Clapper himself have questioned whether the conclusions of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) are accurate, according to reports.
The CIA has opened a slim but remote possibility that members of the Electoral College could prevent Trump from taking office on January 20 by electing someone else as president.
The Electoral College consists of people who are responsible for submitting their respective states’ official votes for president, typically a ceremonial act that certifies an election’s results.
It was unclear whether the Democratic electors are seeking a briefing from the CIA alone or if they also want to hear from other US intelligence agencies that disagree with the CIA’s analysis.
