US Intel Report 'Destroys Credibility' of Russia Hacking Charges - Rohrabacher
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) False accusations that Russia meddled in the 2016 US presidential election via hacking are undermining US democracy and designed to delegitimize President Donald Trump, US Congressman Dana Rohrabacher told Sputnik in an interview.

"This is undermining our democracy and it’s very disturbing to see people who are just afraid to confront this horrible and pathetic distortion and lie that they’re presenting to the American people," Rohrabacher said when asked about the charges of Russian hacking.

The false rhetoric that Russians hacked Democratic National Committee (DNC) computers is election fraud and a means to discredit Trump’s presidency, Rohrabacher added.

A number of US politicians, such former presidential nominee for the Democratic Party Hillary Clinton, have accused Russia of alleged meddling in the US presidential campaign, claiming it was doing so in order to support Trump. These allegations were backed by an assessment of several US security services, such as the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

On January 17, the US Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) submitted a report to then-US President Barack Obama alleging that publicly-released DNC email communications were taken from computers via download, not hack. Commenting on the report on Thursday, Rohrabacher said that the VIPS' assessment undermines accusations that Russia hacked the DNC and released the emails that were damaging to Clinton's presidential campaign.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and other senior Russian officials have repeatedly stated that Moscow refrains from meddling in internal affairs of foreign countries.
