Contrary to predictions, Argentina's Economy Minister and presidential candidate of the ruling leftist forces (Peronist coalition) Sergio Massa emerged as the leader after the first round of the presidential election held on Sunday, October 22. Sputnik spoke with political analyst and journalist Claudio Fantino to analyze the election results.
Sergio Massa secured 36.66% of the vote, beating the winner of the primaries, liberal Javier Milei, by six percentage points and Patricia Bullrich of the right-wing Juntos por el Cambio coalition (English: Together for Change) by 12 percentage points.
According to Fantino, Massa's success in the recent elections was due less to the qualities of the ruling party's candidate than to the lack of enthusiasm for the conservative candidate, Patricia Bullrich. She ran a flawed campaign that focused on criticizing the government rather than presenting attractive proposals. In addition, the public was frightened by Milei's more radical proposals.
"Many Argentines were frightened by some of Milei's most radical proposals, and although Massa did not achieve his stated goals as economy minister, such as reducing the very high inflation that actually increased during his tenure, many people chose to vote for him instead of Milei, who they saw as a leap into the abyss," explained Fantino.
In this regard, the Argentinian analyst also noted that "in the last few days it became clear that there would be some surprises. From the moment of the primaries, all the polls showed Milei as the winner, and the question was who would come in second, Massa or Bullrich. Some even thought that Milei could win in the first round and that there would be no need for a run-off. But in the last few days, many of Milei's supporters made very aggressive, almost extreme statements, and I think a lot of people got scared and changed their minds about voting".
That is why the Argentinian analyst noted that although the gap between these candidates is only six percentage points, "this unexpected turnaround gives the impression that Massa is the absolute winner, while Milei has suffered a setback and will weaken considerably in the second round".
Fantino predicts that Milei, who has criticized the traditional political parties, especially the “Together for Change” coalition, calling them a "caste" that robs the people, will have to change his strategy and move to the center to "seduce" Patricia Bullrich's supporters, who in theory are more aligned with the Libertarian candidate than with Massa.
"For example, figures such as Diana Mondino [who Milei announced would become foreign minister if he is elected president] can be expected to play a more prominent role in his campaign, and some of his more categorical supporters will step aside because it is now necessary to appeal to more moderate voices," he explained.
With regard to Massa, the expert believes that the current Minister of Economy will try to align himself with Juan Schiaretti, the former governor of the province of Cordoba, who ran a respectable campaign and received almost 7% of the votes in the first round.
"Although Schiaretti came in fourth place with a significant gap [from the top three candidates], the votes cast for him will be decisive, so it can be expected that Massa will try to invite Schiaretti into his government to attract his voters," the political analyst said.
However, the analyst warns with a touch of sarcasm, "this is Argentina," and the recent electoral surprises – Milei's unexpected triumph in the primaries and Massa's resounding victory on Sunday, despite finishing third in the primaries – remind us that any outcome is still possible.
"In fact, Massa has the wind at his back at the moment, and Milei is the one who must regroup and try to reverse the defeat, but the final word has not been spoken. Anything can happen and no one can celebrate victory just yet," Fantino concluded.
