Following the recent clashes between the Israeli security forces and Hamas militants, it became increasingly apparent that the latter have become quite adept at drone warfare, using small and cheap unmanned flying craft to take out much more expensive Israeli tanks. This development should hardly come as a surprise, considering that drones have been actively used in armed conflicts in various parts of the globe since at least the 2010s, if not the early 2000s when the US used UAVs during the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, says Alexander Mikhailov, analyst and head of the Bureau of Military-Political Analysis in Russia. He pointed out that, while Hamas has been actively using small makeshift drones that can carry small explosive payload, Israel’s drone warfare capabilities are far more significant.Noting that Israel has apparently not been using its drones in the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip as actively as Hamas has, Mikhailov suggested that Israeli forces likely do not see a reason to do so and rely instead on conventional combat aircraft at the moment.Regarding the apparent effectiveness of the recent drone attacks by Hamas, the analyst speculated that the Israeli authorities were likely aware of the fact that Palestinian militants have drones at their disposal, but did not realize exactly how well Hamas was doing in that department. He also suggested that, while the drone tech Hamas has “will not help the Gaza Strip to defend some sort of independence or statehood, but the constant threat of these drones being used to commit terrorist attacks would make the Israelis’ lives difficult,” if the ongoing conflict were to drag on.

Israel Likely Wasn't Prepared for Hamas' Drone Warfare
18:28 GMT 24.10.2023 (Updated: 18:29 GMT 24.10.2023) The October 7 attack carried out by Hamas militants against Israeli territories has, among other things, highlighted the Palestinian movement’s ability and willingness to employ drones in their operations.
Following the recent clashes between the Israeli security forces and Hamas militants, it became increasingly apparent that the latter have become quite adept at drone warfare, using small and cheap unmanned flying craft to take out much more expensive
Israeli tanks.
He pointed out that, while Hamas has been actively using small makeshift drones that can carry small explosive payload, Israel’s drone warfare capabilities are far more significant.
“Israel as a state that manufactures several types of drones, has its own technologies. We are talking about combat drones, scout drones and small drones that can be guided by operators to attack enemy vehicles,” Mikhailov noted, apparently referring to loitering munitions in the latter instance. “It has practically all types of UAVs at its disposal, [even] advanced types of UAVs.”
Noting that Israel has apparently not been using its drones in the ongoing conflict in the
Gaza Strip as actively as Hamas has, Mikhailov suggested that Israeli forces likely do not see a reason to do so and rely instead on conventional combat aircraft at the moment.
