Putin's Speech at May 9 Parade Awaited by Whole World - Kremlin
11:17 GMT 03.05.2026 (Updated: 13:04 GMT 03.05.2026) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The speech of Russian President Vladimir Putin at the May 9 parade is awaited by the whole world, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
The military parade marking the 81st anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War will be held in Moscow's Red Square on May 9.
"We expect the president to deliver a very important speech at the parade, as is the custom. It is always awaited by the whole world, and rightly so," Peskov told Vesti journalist Pavel Zarubin.
Putin will have a busy schedule on May 9, with a number of bilateral meetings with foreign guests on the agenda, the presidential spokesman said. These include Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
Russia is seeking to achieve goals of its special military operation in Ukraine through a peace agreement, Peskov said.
"For us, the preferable way is to achieve our goals through a deal — a peace agreement. But if the Kiev regime does not feel inclined, we will compel it by conducting and completing the special military operation," Peskov told Vesti journalist Pavel Zarubin.
He suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump saw the Ukrainian government in a similar way.
"They [assessments] are similar. Overall, it is hard to imagine that the perception of the Kiev regime's behavior may vary," Peskov said.
Putin and Trump spoke over the phone on Wednesday. This was their 12th phone call since Trump took office in 2025.
On Saturday, Rodion Miroshnik, the Russian Foreign Ministry's special envoy for crimes of the Ukrainian regime, said that Ukraine showed no readiness for peace and was instead intensifying strikes on civilian targets in Russia.
Washington can "put in its place" the Ukrainian regime, Peskov said.
"In theory, yes, of course it can, and many people know this," Peskov told journalist Pavel Zarubin.
There is already significantly less oil on the global market than there should be due to the shipping constraints in the Strait of Hormuz, Peskov has warned.
Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky claimed this week he had ignored calls from the West not to strike Russian oil infrastructure amid the worsening global oil crisis.
"I don’t know whether he refused the Europeans or not, but the situation is such that, due to a severe energy crisis caused by the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, there is much less oil on the market than there should be," Peskov said.
Global oil prices could rise even further if Russia's oil exports decreased due to Ukrainian drone strikes on its oil export infrastructure, Peskov said.
"If more of our oil is removed from the market, prices will rise even higher than what they are now, and they are already above $120," he emphasized.
Russia and Europe are going back to a "harsh confrontation" due to demonstrative Russophobia and aggressive militarism of EU countries, Peskov said.
"The Europeans are mobilizing by using demonstrative Russophobia as a trigger. They are ready to spend big money on military buildup and are making various confrontational moves … And all this, of course, is bringing us back to the times of harsh confrontation with Europe, first and foremost," Peskov told Vesti journalist Pavel Zarubin.
Peskov suggested that the Europeans were increasing military spending to make up for a drawdown in US military engagement in Europe.
On Saturday, US President Donald Trump said that he was planning to reduce the number of US troops in Germany by more than 5,000 soldiers. The move followed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's criticism of Trump's handling of the war with Iran.
Europe is using blatant Russophobia as a trigger for mobilization, which leads to harsh confrontation with Russia, Peskov also said.
"A third player has emerged here. You see that Europeans are mobilizing, using this blatant Russophobia as a trigger. They are ready to spend a lot of money on military buildup," Peskov told journalist Pavel Zarubin.
He noted that Europe is returning to a period of harsh confrontation with Russia and is taking various actions in this direction.
