The Russian embassy has been receiving a steady stream of inquiries from Swedish citizens interested in the possibility of moving to Russia using the “traditional values” visa scheme, Russian Ambassador to Stockholm Sergey Belyaev tells Sputnik.
The mechanism was introduced by President Vladimir Putin in August 2024, allowing eligible foreigners to obtain temporary residence in Russia through a simplified procedure.
“Since then, the embassy’s consular section has been receiving inquiries almost every week from Swedish citizens interested in the possibility of moving to Russia using the mechanisms for obtaining visas and, later, residence permits provided for in this document,” the ambassador says.
And the interest is not limited to native-born Swedes.
The embassy is also hearing from naturalized Swedish citizens originally from countries including Australia, Afghanistan, Brazil, Germany, Iraq, Syria, the US, France, Finland, Switzerland and the Baltic states, he notes.
The potential newcomers are hardly a single demographic either.
The diplomat says they are predominantly university-educated professionals from technical, economic and humanities fields, along with students and recent graduates.
Many of them are exploring the possibility of moving not immediately, but at some point in the future.
“They ask what documents they would need to prepare and what conditions might be available to them in Russia,” Belyaev notes.
Over 1,000 foreigners received Russia’s 'traditional values' visa in 2025.
The majority of these visas - 168 in total - were issued to German citizens, according to Alexei Klimov, Director of the Consular Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The visas are granted under President Putin’s executive order, "On Providing Humanitarian Support to Persons Sharing Traditional Russian Spiritual and Moral Values”.
