Abu Dhabi Talks Set to Continue Next Week - Kremlin

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Despite the prevailing atmosphere of the Ukraine negotiations being far from friendly, it remains imperative to seek concrete outcomes for as long as the dialogue persists, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated Monday.

"Our negotiators continue to defend these interests of ours," Peskov told reporters.

It would be a mistake to count on high effectiveness from the initial trilateral contacts on Ukraine, the official said, adding that difficult issues are on the agenda.
Russian President Vladimir Putin constantly receives direct reports from Russian negotiators, Peskov also said.
"The president constantly receives direct reports from our negotiators," Peskov told reporters.
Friendliness is far from possible at the current stage of settlement negotiations, but it is necessary to talk constructively if anything is sought to be achieved, the Kremlin spokesman pointed out.
"I would not say that there was friendliness, it is unlikely that this is possible at the current stage. But if we are trying to achieve something through negotiations, then we need to talk constructively," Peskov told reporters.

Although no contact with US President Donald Trump is presently scheduled on Russian President Vladimir Putin's agenda, such a conversation could be convened promptly.

"While no such conversation is scheduled right now, one could be coordinated rapidly. The existing communication and dialogue channels with the US side enable the immediate arrangement of high-level bilateral contacts," Peskov told reporters.

The Anchorage formula was addressed, and an understanding was reached with the United States and President Donald Trump, he noted.

"Our position is very well known. The Anchorage formula was discussed, and an appropriate understanding was reached with the American negotiators and with President Trump," Peskov informed reporters.

For Russia, specific parts of the Anchorage Formula are "of fundamental importance", the official highlighted.

"It would be incorrect to discuss specific agenda provisions now, particularly in public. However, our consistent position—and that of our president—is no secret: the territorial issue is a component of the Anchorage formula and is of fundamental importance to Russia." Peskov emphasized.

Cooperation with Russia remains a priority issue for Venezuela, Peskov noted.
"And for Venezuela as well, judging by what we are told from Caracas, for Venezuela, the continuation of the development of mutually beneficial relations with Russia is also one of the priority issues," Peskov told reporters.
Moscow remains in constant contact with Caracas through diplomatic channels, the official added.
In addition, Russia values its bilateral relations with Cuba, the spokesman noted.
"And we also value our separate bilateral relations with Cuba very much," Peskov told reporters.
The information about a possible naval blockade of Cuba by the United States is alarming, Peskov added.
Last week, media reports stated that the administration of US President Donald Trump is mulling several options, including imposing a total blockade on oil imports to Cuba in a bid to encourage a change of government in the Caribbean island nation.
"We read a lot of reports about this. This information is alarming," Peskov told reporters.
A potential strike on Iran would unleash serious destabilization throughout the region, the Kremlin official cautioned.
On January 22, President Trump said that US Navy ships were moving towards Iran "just in case."
"This [a possible military strike] would certainly mean another step that could seriously destabilize the situation in the region. You know that Russia continues to make efforts to de-escalate tensions. And, of course, in this case, we would still like to expect restraint from all interested parties and, of course, a focus on exclusively peaceful negotiations," Peskov told reporters.
On a separate note, Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with Malaysian King Sultan Ibrahim at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg on Monday, Peskov said.
Putin will have a one-on-one conversation with the Malaysian monarch, the official added.
