Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot on May 15, 2024, during a government meeting in the town of Handlova, 190 kilometers northeast of the country’s capital Bratislava. The prime minister was rushed to hospital with reported wounds to his abdomen and chest.
The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the attack on Fico, and spokeswoman Maria Zakharova wished the Slovak prime minister a speedy recovery. She also noted that Russia knows Fico as a friend of the country, who is not afraid of expressing his point of view at a crucial moment in human history. Earlier, Fico promised to stop military aid to Ukraine, criticized sanctions against Russia, and threatened to veto an invitation for Kiev to join NATO.
