On November 27, armed groups launched a large-scale offensive on government positions in the Syrian provinces of Aleppo and Idlib. By the evening of December 7, opponents of President Bashar al-Assad had captured several major cities, including Aleppo, Hama, Daraa and Homs. On Sunday morning they entered the capital Damascus, as Syrian army units withdrew from the city. Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali expressed readiness to oversea a peaceful transfer of power in the republic.
