President Ebrahim Raisi was pronounced dead on May 20 following a helicopter crash in a foggy western mountain range while travelling back from a visit to the Azerbaijan border. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared five days of mourning and appointed Mohammad Mokhber as interim president until elections are held within 50 days. Alongside Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and seven others were killed in the crash.
